The government shipped approximately 1000 US Springfield trapdoor carbines to the 7th Cavalry between serial numbers 17400 and 18400 between December 1873 and January 1874. The 7th Cavalry received their shipment in June 1874. The left side of the stock has the early ESA cartouche for Erskin Allin with script P at wrist base. This is the high arch version with long wrist, early carbine rear sight correctly not marked with a C. The barrel is void of VP eagle head proofs. Single band with swivel and saddle ring with bar on left side. Lock has standard "US SPRINGFIELD" with eagle. Breech block is stamped 1873 with US and eagle head. Butt plate has no trapdoor nor any corresponding hole in stock. CONDITION: Very good. All metal is a smooth patina with sharp legends. Wood is excellent with usual scattered light dings and impressions with some wiped on added finish. Mechanically sound. Bore is well defined with minor abrasion. Very clean Custer era carbine.
