This high wall originally shipped November 28, 1887 as a special order deluxe rifle. Rifle was subsequently modified by Axel Peterson, as marked "A.W. PETERSON - DENVER, COLO." on the barrel. Peterson opened a gun shop in Denver, Colorado in 1886 and operated a well known custom shop there. The blued period replacement barrel is round and of heavy contour with wind gauge globe front sight and drilled and tapped holes for scope blocks. Case hardened high wall frame with single set trigger and mid-range tang sight. Deluxe checkered walnut splinter forend with ebony inlaid Schnabel tip. Nicely figured deluxe stock with checkered pistol grip, hard rubber WRACO grip cap, and contemporary nickel plate Swiss buttplate. Lower tang is marked with "1181 XXX SBC" assembly number, wood grade, and special order feature mark. Butt appears to be original Winchester production with assembly number "2901" under the butt plate. CONDITION: Very fine as professionally customized in the period of use. Barrel retains the vast majority of its blue with muzzle wear and thinning on the underside. Frame colors have faded somewhat but are still visible, some areas turned to a silver patina. Stocks fit well and have an added coat of varnish. Expected scattered impressions. Very good, bright bore with well defined rifling. Fine mechanics. Set trigger in order at the time of cataloging. A handsome Western deluxe high wall.
