Circa late 1840s. Pistols are fitted with scarcely encountered 6" browned barrels, "P" proofed and marked "DERINGER / PHILADEL" between pairs of inlaid bands at the breeches. Muzzles are decorated with file contouring and light engraving. The back action percussion locks are characteristically marked "DERINGER / PHILADELA" with foliate engraving. Checkered American walnut stocks with engraved German silver cap box pommels, circa 1849-50 pineapple finial steel trigger guards, silver escutcheons and side plate, and a German silver mouth. Each pistol is equipped with a silver tipped ram rod retained by silver thimbles. They are housed in a period black leather wrapped, French fitted case. Additional accessories include mold, flask, and tools. CONDITION: Very good. Iron finishes have largely faded to a pleasant gunmetal patina. Silver has mellowed. Stocks are very good with scattered impressions. Crisp checkering. As is often seen, small splits present running between the side plates and breeches. Defined bores with black powder abrasion. Fine mechanics. Case has a split lid and other evidence of age but displays the pistols very well.
