Classic configuration marrying a nine shot revolver and a single shotgun barrel, which proved extremely popular with both Confederate and Union soldiers. Top of barrel has gothic "Systeme Le Mat Bte s.g.d.g. Paris" in a lozenge with dressed ends. Right side of barrel with "1952" and "*/LM" proof. Left side has a small "W. DUNCAN" stamp partially obfuscated by the loading rammer, meaning unknown. Matching numbers observed on cylinder, frame, takedown pin, and barrel. LeMat revolvers are the iconic Confederate firearm, and were associated with a number of high profile Confederate leaders, including Beauregard and J.E.B. Stuart; Stuart was famously killed at Yellow Tavern while using his. CONDITION: Excellent, and one of the best this writer has observed. Retains the majority, approximately 60%, of the original bluing, with distension about some proofs still visible from application of the stamp. Some mottling and thinning throughout, with frame and wrist essentially gunmetal grey with some fine oxidation. As is common with LeMats, the loading lever was damaged, and this example was welded back together and reblued to match. Mechanically fine, hammer pivots appropriately, bore with strong rifling and some areas of oxidation. An absolutely outstanding example.
