John Krider worked in Philadelphia beginning in the 1820s through about 1870, his work often mimicking that of the iconic Henry Deringer. This large matched pair of pistols certainly shows this distinct Philadelphia style. These pistols are built with heavy round target barrels with flattened sighting ribs marked "PHILADA". Dovetailed German silver front sights and v-notch rears. Breeches are engraved with some pleasant foliates. The back action percussion locks are signed "JOHN KRIDER" and features some light tendrils and rope border engraving. Stocks are checkered walnut of unusually fine figure with bag grips. Mounts include a German silver nose cap and key escutcheons, engraved steel trigger guards with Philadelphia finials, and German silver grip escutcheons. Ramrods appear to be replacements. Pistols are housed in a well fitting period partitioned mahogany case with silver plated flask, mold, and other tools. A paper Krider label present on the lid liner although likely added later. CONDITION: Very good. Steel has a bright cleaned patina with some evidence of older oxidation spotting. Trigger guards have more of a mellow gray patina. Stocks shows some expected impressions and marks. Checkering remains crisp. Well defined, frosted bores. Fine mechanics. Case is good, showing signs of use and storage. Liner appears original and has some staining and losses. A nice cased pair of signed American pistols.
