John H. Kreider worked in Philadelphia circa 1826 to 1876. This true pair of derringer pistols handsomely fashioned after their namesake Philadelphian gunmaker Henry Deringer are numbered behind the trigger guard "1" and "2". Their pocket size octagon barrels are stamped "J. KRIDER" with foliate tendril engraving at the breeches between pairs of German silver bands. Guns have unmarked back action percussion locks with flourishes of engraving. Stocks are checkered walnut of classic Philadelphia bird's head form with engraved German silver mounts. Pistols are housed in an original French fitted black leather wrapped case with mold, flask, and tools. The red velvet interior retains its Krider paper label. CONDITION: Very good. Iron components have faded to a pleasant dove gray patina. German silver remains bright. Engraving and other markings are clean and strong. Stocks are fine with some minor marks. Bore are strong but show evidence of black powder use. Fine mechanics. Case is fine, the interior showing some expected fading. Label has some chipping along the lower edge. A very scarce and lovely cased pair of Philadelphia derringers.
