According to specialist L. Doug Eberhart, this is the only known matched pair of 2nd type, circa 1830-1831, pistols by Henry Deringer. Early "DERINGER / PHILA" marker marks present on each breech between engraved geometric bands. Petite blade front sights and v-notch rears. Back action locks are engraved with light foliates and stamped "DERINGER / PHILA". Checkered walnut bag gripped stocks with engraved blued steel trigger guards. Key and grip escutcheons are coin silver. Each includes a brass tipped hickory ram rod. Pistols are housed in a relined partitioned hardwood case with flask, mold, cap tin, and tools. PROVENANCE: Ex. Eberhart Collection. CONDITION: Very good overall. Gun (A) retains traces of browning on the barrel, the balance largely bright with some cleaned spotting. Tang has traces of finish. Lock and trigger guard have faded to patina. Portions of original blue are displayed on the ferrule. Stock has impressions and a split between the trigger guard finial and ferrule. Defined rifling with abrasion. Fine mechanics. Gun (B) has a lightly cleaned, bright barrel. Lock has faded to patina. Traces of finish are retained on the tang. Rear portion rigger guard displays bright blue, the front faded to patina. Ferrule retains the majority of its original blue. Well defined bore. Fine mechanics. Case is very good as refurbished. A very rare and attractive set.
