Receiver dates to 1940. Total pre-64 production in this caliber was only 3.43% This presentation rifle is inlaid in gold wire on floorplate "Susie Boyd" surrounded by American scroll including the trigger guard. Almost the entire surface of the frame is done in the same style scroll as is the rear tang, barrel breech, and muzzle with gold band. What looks like this same style of engraving is found in the Rule book on page 281. The bolt is jeweled. The Super Grade style walnut stock appears to be at least 2x quality and features the checkered pistol grip, Winchester grip cap, straight comb, checkered steel butt plate, Super Grade swivels and black forearm tip. Standard features include the pre-war safety and stripper clip cut frame. The front sight is a dovetail blade on ramp base. The rear slot is empty. CONDITION: Excellent. Retains nearly all its blue finish with hint of muzzle wear and few handling marks. There is some finish wear on bolt. The stock is excellent with some scattered impressions. Every aspect of this rifle appears factory including the hue of the floorplate with inscription. Just a stunning engraved pre-war Model 70.
CORRECTION: The engraving is signed "NK" for Nick Kusmit, Winchester factory and Custom Shop engraver from 1950 to 1981. There is evidence that a scope mount was mounted to the receiver at one point and was subsequently plugged.
