As the War drew to a close and Allied forces pushed into Germany in the Spring of 1945, Walther continued production of P.38s until the factory was captured in April. Among the very last military guns produced were a group of less than 2000 P.38s numbered in a second zero prefix series. These were assembled largely from leftover HP and rejected commercial parts beginning circa late February. This example is among the first hundred produced in the series, the earliest known serial number recorded by Buxton as "025838". Pistol is finished in blue with some expected machining marks. Left side of the slide stamped with "P.38" designation and "AC 45" code. Right has a pair of eagle over "359" acceptance stamps and a test eagle. Grips are attractive serrated red composition wraparounds. "P.38" marked magazine is numbered "8123" on the base plate. Matching numbers observed on the right side of the frame and front of the barrel lug. Locking lug is numbered "397". CONDITION: Excellent. Nearly all of the original factory blue is retained with very faint silvering along some of the high edges. Grips have a few marks. Crisp, bright bore. Fine mechanics. Considering the outstanding, unissued condition of this pistol it may have never left the factory and became a prized war trophy for a GI.
