Chopper lump barrels fit with a narrow, filed, solid rib and signed "CANNE SPECIALI FABRICATE DA WEBLEY & SCOTT Ltd BIRMINGHAM · PER ORDINE DI FRATELLI STANZANI BOLOGNA", indicating that the gun was manufactured by Webley and Scott for the Stanzani Brothers on a special order. Underside of the barrels with W&C Scott trademark, a small "1071 · 7 · 1920" behind forearm loop. Barrel flats with British view proof, and serial number. Sling bow on island screwed to underside of rib. Flat bottom splinter forearm with point pattern checkering about a central emblem. Reinforced Anson plunger release and exterior iron engraved with florals and scroll with fabulous detail. Action flats with Simpson import mark, serial number, Stanzani Brothers, and Bologna marks. Disc set strikers. Holland & Holland pattern side locks with gold line cocking indicators and essentially full coverage of the fabulous miniscule English scroll overlaid by florals and ribbons design that Corombelle developed and was best known for. The quality is absolutely outstanding, and the juxtaposition of scroll and floral work produces an almost three dimensional effect, with the scroll as a background. Bottom of action with "FRATELLI STANZANI BOLOGNA" in a ribbon hanging from a sconce. Non-automatic safety with a golden intaglio "S" ahead of slide. Signed "H. COROMBELLE" abutting the trigger guard. Double triggers, front hinged, protected by a long tang trigger guard with engraving en suite, and signed "H. COROMBELLE GRAVR". Richly streaked walnut stock with a Royal style diamond cross sectioned grip, checkered in a point pattern about the wrist. Sling bow on stud at toe line, and with a gold inset "1" and a banner that reads "MEDALIA D'ORO DEL MINISTERO ESPONSIZIONE BOLOGONA - APRILE - 1925", indicating it won the gold metal at the Ministry Exhibition in April, 1925. Orange rubber recoil pad with a leather face. Further accenting the artistry of this piece is the included letters that show it was owned by Ennio Mattarelli, the founder of Perazzi and Mattarelly Clay Target Machines, who deaccessed the gun from his collection in 2016; there are also a number of photos of Mr. Mattarelli with this gun. CONDITION: Barrels with virtually all of a top quality reblack, with some very minor handling marks. Legends still sharp and crisp. Action excellent, engraving still razor sharp, with some extremely faint color case hardening about the fences. Stock excellent, reoiled, but with some handling marks and a few impresisons, most noticeable on left side. This is an absolutely fabulous gun, well acknowledged as a work of art for more than 100 years, and tied to one of the most important people in the sporting shotgun world.
CORRECTION: Only the barrels of this shotgun were made by Webley & Scott on special order for the Stanzani Brothers.
