Manufactured at the short lived Palmetto Armory in the US M1842 pattern and dated 1852. The South Carolina general assembly passed "An Act to Provide for the Defense of the State" in 1850 which authorized $350,000 for the purchase of "munitions of war". Lock is marked "PALMETTO. ARMORY. S*C" with spiral palmetto tree in the center forward of hammer and "COLUMBIA / S.C. 1852" behind hammer. Barrel is marked "P / V / (palmetto tree)" near breech and "W G & CO." on left barrel flat. "S.C." marking observed in front of buttplate, in front of buttplate screw, and behind buttplate screw. Right side of stock is marked with "S W f" scratched out and "kill marks" near wrist. Barrel has one brass band. Accompanied by a reprint of the American Society of Arms Collectors Bulletin 115:51-64 titled "The Palmetto Rifle, an Examination of the Survivors" as well as a print from the National Museum of American History Behring Center's website featuring a Palmetto Musket in their collection. CONDITION: Fair, with barrel cut down and forearm shortened. Ramrod is an older replacement. Forearm has an approximately 5" long large chip near muzzle. Barrel and metal assemblies are a brown patina with evidence of cleaning on top of barrel. Wrist of stock has a stable crack near rear of lockplate. Mechanically fine. Bore is dark.
