After the disastrous 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn, the 7th Cavalry returned to Fort Abraham Lincoln to reorganize and rearm. Kopec notes that a large portion of the 17XXX serial number of range of Colt Single Action Army revolvers was issued to the 7th Cavalry, although no specific record for this revolver could be located. It was originally manufactured in 1875, and later factory reworked for reissue to the New York State Militia, shipping from the factory October 11, 1895. The polish blued barrel is rollmarked with barrel address correct for its reissue in 1895. Blade front sight and frame notch rear. Early style bullseye ejector rod head. Frame is case hardened and marked on the left with 2-line address and "U.S." marking. 1-piece walnut grip stamped deeply on the right "55", presumably a rack number. Matching numbers throughout, some renumbered by the factory during its rework. Lot is accompanied by a 2001 John Kopec Letter of Authenticity as well as a display plaque. CONDITION: Near excellent. barrel retains approximately 90% factory blue with muzzle wear and handling marks throughout. Ejector rod housing has expected holster wear. Cylinder retains the majority of its factory blue. Generous case colors. Grips appear lightly cleaned with impressions and wear. Bore is well defined with some light frosting. Crisp mechanics. Main spring appears to be a later replacement. A very nice example of a desirable Indian Wars Colt that very possibly saw service with the 7th Cavalry.
