Springfield Armory produced just 477 finely appointed sporting style Model 1875 trapdoor rifles, available for private purchase by officers. This rifle appears rather early production and features finer engraving than usually encountered. The blued barrel is stamped at the breech with "V / P" and eagle head proofs. It sports a Lyman Beech front sight and "R" marked rifle rear sight. As would be correct for a Type I Officer's Model, it is fitted with an arsenal modified Sharps Vernier tang sight. The case hardened action has engraved rope borders with a block of foliate scroll above the chamber. High arch breech block is stamped "MODEL / 1873 / US" with eagle head and crossed arrow devices, as well as engraved robe borders and vine engraving. The "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873" marked lockplate, hammer, and release also are finely engraved with shaded foliate tendrils and rope borders. Correct 2-click tumbler and set trigger. The figured walnut stock is hand checkered with double line borders and fitted with an engraved pewter nose cap, engraved barrel band, engraved trigger guard without swivel, and engraved solid butt plate. Includes correct style hickory wiping rod with nickel plated cap. PROVENANCE: Ex. Bruce McDowell Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains nearly all of its bright blue with some scattered dings, freckles, and minor losses. Case colors appear refreshed and are attractively vibrant. Stock has a few scattered impressions but is otherwise very fine. Especially fine, crisp and bright bore. Fine mechanics. Set trigger in order. A very handsome rifle.
