Characters known to collectors also as “Jean Qui Pleure et Jean Qui Rit” (Jean who cries and Jean who laughs), the story of two boys with different dispositions, one is pleasant, one a grumbler. Based on the book written by La Comtesse Sophie Ségur published in 1865. This popular story inspired sculpture, dolls, an operetta, and piano music. The dolls have cloth armature bodies with wax heads, lower arms and legs. Character faces are well modeled with lots of facial detail with inset eyes, open mouths with teeth and tongues, one laughing and one crying, hair inset into scalp. Wearing all original identical costumes, brown pants, jackets, vests and shirts. One damaged finger repaired. Lot includes a copy of the book and an antique framed signed print which shows the dolls.
