School: US Purchase “Civil War”. Circa 1862 to 1863. This Joslyn 1862 Carbine is all original including its sling bar and ring, having the U.S. inspector’s cartouche on the left hand flat. This is an early production, serial # 2684, using a .44 ringfire cartridge. Both the barrel tang and the breech block are marked with the same serial number. The markings on the breechblock are as follows: B.F. Joslyn’s Patent, October 8th, 1861, June 24th 1862 2684. The lock is marked Joslyn Firearms Co., Stonington, CT. The brass barrel band which holds the oxidized 22-inch barrel in place has been polished and the stock has a later coat of varnish or shellac applied. This was possibly used by the Ninth Pennsylvania Cavalry.
CORRECTION: The caliber of the barrel is actually .52, not .44. There is a possibility that the barrel band was replaced with a barrel band from an earlier model.
