Selinsgrove, PA. School: Upper Susquehanna. Circa 1925 to 1835. Overall length: 58”. Caliber: .36. Barrel length: 42”. Octagon to round barrel. Flintlock mechanism. No patchbox. Curly maple stock. No carvings. Ten original silver inlays. This smooth bore gun was made by John Parks, of Snyder County, working in Selinsgrove in the first half of the 19th century. The barrel, a full “octagon to round”, is signed “J.P.”, whose initials are known to collectors of the Upper Susquehanna school of gunsmithing. The original flintlock is an imported British one which is completely intact. The long slender curly maple forestock has a “like-new”, original finish and has an amber color. In addition, there are ten silver inlays, all typical of the Snyder/Union County School. The silver crescent moon on the cheek piece is a “calling card” of that regional group and of course, it has a brass “comb-plate” and forestock “wear-plate”, and also a classic full length lock-bolt plate and toe plate. Additionally, the rear ferrule is typically two pieces with an iron pin clinching the two together, another hallmark of this region. This long, slender, “buck and ball” gun is perfect in all respects and it has extremely nice architecture.
