Circa late 19th century. Early photo shows player holding bat and posing in a photographer's studio. Appears to be a proof but does not say so on the back. Mathews played for the Athletics in 1887 as a pitcher. He went three wins and 4 losses. Born in 1857 and died in 1898. Mathews also played for the Mutuals, Red Stockings, and the Canaries between 1871 and 1887. Right-handed pitcher, 5'5", and weighed 140 pounds.
