Mid 19th century, Pennsylvania. The first in black paint with red on underside of brim, decorated with a "Pennsylv.A Hose" on a banner centering the image of a fireman in period dress within a wreath flanked by rearing horses. The interior with a hand written paper affixed to the interior identifying the hat as belonging to the Pennsylvania Hose Co. No. 21 Philadelphia, Pa. instituted-August, 4. 1831. The second hat is red paint, decorated with the word "DILIGENT" in a banner above a cartouche with 5 point star beneath the word "HOSE" the underside of brim in green paint with the initials E.D/D.H. Co. The reverse paint decorated with an active beehive flanked by flower shrubs. Both examples with surface soiling and significant wear from extended use. The Diligent hat with a depression tear in top section. Hats retain original paint surface with abrasion throughout.
