This Bowie-style knife is an absolute work of art. Crown stag butt with sole leather spacers intermixed with red plastic, aluminum and black rubber spacers. The overall length is 13-3/4", with a blade length of 8-1/8" The blade measures over 5/16" thick at the haft. The blade is stamped with Scagel’s small iconic Kris stamp. The blade is a classic slightly up-swept Bowie design with a false edge ground to perfectly symmetrical proportions. This is a most difficult grind to accomplish and very few makers today can accomplish this. This knife was made 1925 or earlier. The accompanying brown leather Scagel-made form fitted-style sheath is original to this knife and is in very fine condition. The sheath is stitched with brown cotton with rivets at tip and top. Decorative nickel finished snap on retaining strap. PROVENANCE: Dr. Jim Lucie Collection. CONDITION: Very fine with typical staining as is often found on these knives The blade has been period sharpened but done so properly. The knife is accompanied by a letter from Dr. Lucie dated 2014 explaining that he believes the knife originated in Canada but was discovered in Maine. The back of the scabbard is inscribed with the name R. Teed of which no information is known. A wonderful Scagel knife in massive proportions. Made by the Grandfather of American custom knives and from the world renown Lucie collection. TDW
