Made by Fernando Perez of Mexico City. Saddle is built on an open seated rawhide-covered tree. The entire pommel is capped in hammer relief (repousse) silver work in a floral design. Horn is round and approximately 8" in diameter. Seat is open. Rear of seat has a silver repousse silver cap. Saddle has integral cantina saddlebags mounted behind the seat. Saddlebags and skirt are both decorated with high relief carved floral decorations with leather rosettes. Conchos, cinch strap, buckle, and stirrups all are decorated with a horseshoe motif. Stirrup straps are plain with a simple intertwining line motif. Latigo conchos are all horseshoe-shaped. Accompanying saddle is a silver-mounted bit and bridle. Bridle has a medium-size spade with rein chains attached to front. Cheek straps are made of hinged silver plates with silver buckles. Bit cheeks have large silver conchos. Bit has steel discs with copper inlay decoration. Saddle maker’s mark and address is marked in ink on back of seat. Saddle has a blue wool felt liner. CONDITION: Excellent overall. Cantina bag has been slightly detached on left side. Some of the high relief carved leather flowers show some high-point damage. One bridle strap has a partially broken hinge by buckle on left side. A wonderful example of the late 19th century Mexican Charro saddle. These saddles were ridden by very skilled horsemen in Mexican rodeos, known as Charreria. Saddle is very ornate and displays well, in superlative condition showing no evidence of ever being ridden. -MKS-
