Circa 1880-1890 pipe tomahawk with cast pewter head that measures 23" total length. Very interesting pipe haft is heavily file branded, carved with arrow designs, and adorned with steel tacks; drilled and has been heavily smoked. Pewter head measures 7" tall with a 3 - 1/4" cutting edge. Head has a rectangular eye and is engraved with circular designs on both sides and the bowl. The haft is drilled just aft of the blade and is adorned with a drop constructed of porcupine-quilled harness leather strips with dew claws. Pewter tomahawks are very soft, so the survival rate is low. This lack of durability made pewter tomahawks serve more ceremonial purposes. CONDITION: Wood haft shows a nice warm patina, and the tacks have never been polished. Pewter head is fairly tight to the haft and shows age-commensurate wears and dings to the body and cutting edge.
