Measures 23" by 17" measured without fringe. Given the painted field, it is likely pre-Civil or Civil War era. Flag depicts a less detailed version of the New York State Seal, with "Excelsior" (trans: Ever Higher) on ribbon underneath painted section of field. Twin figures of Liberty and Justice are on either side of the painted field, which has an eagle perched atop. The painted field reflects a scene overlooking what appears to be the Hudson Bay with a solitary ship on the water. There is visible line work from some point in the past when someone added detail to Liberty and Justice that has now faded and leaves only traces. Underneath the "Excelsior" ribbon is a pair of crossed cannons. Mounted with the flag in its frame is a Civil War Artillery Captain's shoulder strap. Someone taped the flag to its current backing with double sided tape long ago, and due to possible damage we have elected not to remove the flag from its backing. Artillery bars not removed for same reason. Frame is contemporary and exists only the protect the flag. CONDITION: Good for a flag of this age. There are some visible areas of old repair where the flag has torn and someone either taped or glued it back together. There are other areas, primarily along the right side of the fly, which are still open and need attention. There are a few areas where mold was cleaned off, leaving spotting. Painting has extensive cracquelure and some losses to paint. Artillery bars are faded with minor losses. EW
Item Dimensions: Frame: 23 - 3/4" x 29 - 3/4" x 3/4".
