According to a letter from James A. Hanson Ph.D of the Museum of the Fur Trade, this rifle has the characteristics of a 1790-1812 period piece. It is marked by Ketland & Company of Birmingham. It also bears a "Fox-in-Circle" mark believed to denote this gun was sold by the Michilimackinac Company, later known as the "South West Company". A serpent side plate distinctive of Indian Trade guns, this example has a 42" barrel and 57" overall.
