Gilt brass hilt with bone grip. Eaglehead with open beak, backstrap leading to ferrule. Reverse 'P' guard with deeply cast foliate designs, and swirling, deeply cast foliate languettes. Grip has channeled bands, chevrons, crosshatch leaf designs. Spadroon blade blued, gilt and bright etched. Each side with two foliate panels, one side with arms display and liberty cap on pole, the other with an American eagle with shield, ribbon overhead. Blue terminates in scrolling floral/flame ends. CONDITION: Subdued gilt on brass hilt. Grip with some shrinkage along top edge but no cracks and stable. Gold washed etching is very visible, bright etched panels of arms and eagle are light with rubbing and some grey spots that extends down into the blue on obverse. Smooth metal with good edge and point above. Scattered grey and brown spots, some of which will clean. Scabbard mounts foliate engraved. Two upper and one lower ring, all in place. Black leather scabbard broken above the drag, which is present, but loose. The open beak of the eagle and scrolling foliate languettes give the hilt some energy. SR
