July 22nd 2017 Premier Fine & Decorative Art & Watches
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 7/22/2017
This lot consists of a portrait of President Millard Fillmore. As noted on the verso of the piece, from Vose Galleries of Boston, the artist is Henry Augustus Loop, "Portrait of a Man" and it is oil on canvas that is signed on the back and dated 1861. While the verso of the piece has white board on it, a piece on the bottom has been cut out so that the artists signature and date are revealed. The artist has depicted President Fillmore in a very traditional styled portrait. The President is standing in the center of the image with red curtains draped on either side. Just behind the President is a padded comfortable chair and on the left there is a table with a faded red table cloth. On top of that table are several items, among them a book that the President must have been reading as his hand holds the book open. The President is dressed in a black suit with matching vest and a white collared shirt and black bow tie. Even though the artist is noted on the verso of the painting, on the left side of the canvas towards the bottom the artist has put his initials and date, "H. A. L. 61." The painting is framed in a wooden gilt frame. Some areas on the frame are deficient of coloring. Overall the painting is in good condition with some areas deficient of paint with minor craquelure and normal wear.
Condition: (Very Good - Excellent).
Item Dimensions: Framed: 19-1/4" x 25-1/8".
