For 2 nearly identical examples, see pg. 35, plate 31 in "American Polearms 1526-1865" by Brown, and accession number 29.156.44 at the Met, both of which attribute the design to pre-Revolutionary War New Hampshire. Central spike with a medial ridge measures approximately 10 - 1/2", decorated with 6 small dots and 2 larger dots near the base. Hooked spike with pierced fleur-de-lis design and hearts measures approximately 5". Concave axe head with pierced hearts and fleur-de-lis en suite measures 7 - 3/4". Straps measures approximately 10 - 1/4" and are retained by peened nails. Faceted haft with most of its original crazed dark finish. Shaft is 45 - 1/2" CONDITION: As found. Metal is essentially a smooth chocolate patina throughout. One strap missing approximately 5/8" off the end and lifting out of the wood. Haft with handling marks and some minor scrapes throughout.
