Lot #1331:
SALESMAN SAMPLE "CANNONBALL" MOSLER SAFE CO. IN BOX
-THE MOSLER SAFE COMPANY-
CANNONBALL SAFE — SALESMAN’S SAMPLE
Hamilton, Ohio • Circa 1890s
A LEGENDARY BANK SAFE — BUILT IN MINIATURE
An extraordinarily rare Mosler Cannonball Safe salesman’s sample, created so company salesmen could demonstrate one of America’s most formidable bank safes directly to prospective customers.
Full-size Mosler Cannonball safes weighed approximately 3,500–4,500 pounds. Rather than transport the massive safe, Mosler produced these remarkably detailed miniature examples that allowed salesmen to demonstrate its construction and operation in person.
Measuring approximately 17” high and weighing just 25 pounds, this example features an operating door and crank mechanism and retains its original fitted, velvet-lined wooden carrying case—an important and highly desirable part of the original salesman’s presentation.
More than 130 years later, surviving Cannonball salesman’s samples are seldom encountered, particularly examples retaining their original carrying case.
FROM MORE THAN TWO TONS TO JUST 25 POUNDS —
MOSLER PUT ITS LEGENDARY CANNONBALL SAFE IN A CASE A SALESMAN COULD CARRY.
