The Mexican–American War was also known in the United States as the Mexican War and in Mexico as the American intervention in Mexico. It followed in the wake of the 1845 American annexation of the Republic of Texas, not formally recognized by the Mexican government, disputing the Treaties of Velasco signed by Antonio López de Santa Anna after the Texas Revolution a decade earlier. In 1845, newly elected U.S. President James K. Polk sent troops to the disputed area and a diplomatic mission to Mexico. After Mexican forces attacked American forces, Polk cited this in his request that Congress declare war. The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war and enforced the Mexican Cession of the northern territories of Alta California and Santa Fe de Nuevo México to the United States. This is a rare Marine Corp cap referred to as a Dragoon Wheel Cap from that time period. It consists of blue wool body, leather band and visor with USM badge with Eagle and anchor band buttons. There are no retailer or maker stencils inside but does have the leather inner band and cotton liner. CONDITION: Good, complete, with a few very small moth nips. Leather visor, sweatband, and front strap are tender with crazing but complete.
