Flat board Indian. Height 6 feet 5 inches. This very rare figure was a type made for narrow doorways and easy storage, came from Baltimore, MD. Although some of the earliest tobacco signs are said to have been flat boards such as this one. Consignor states this sign is circa the 1885 period. Marked E.H. carved on the bend of the elbow. Similar early flat board cigar store signs are pictured and described in "Cigar Store Figures In American Folk Art" by A. W. Pendergast and W.Porter Ware and "Artists In Wood" by Frederick Fried, among others. Similar pieces have been valued up to $18,000.
