This rifle has a wonderful "horse head" finial on its four-piece, brass patch box, with scrolled engraving, typical of Lancaster area gun smiths, such as Henry Albright or Abraham Schweitzer, both of whom relocated from Lancaster to the Chambersburg, Franklin County area in the early 19th century. The rifle has a full octagonal (29 1/2") barrel with rifle sights and a dark brown, pleasing surface as does the flintlock ( a very nice re-conversion). The maple stock also has a pleasing warm, patina and shows its original surface with a variety of "nut brown and black' colors. There are three silver inlays, one being an engraved diamond on the cheek piece and a 5" long brass toe plate. The brass trigger guard and the rear ferrule show a "scaling-back" of proportions as does the very short fore-arm. There is a 5 1/2" - 6" long piece of wood carefully added to the upper forestock with a replacement nose-cap. All in all, this is a very uncommon, attractive youth's (or young lady) rifle.
YOUNG BOYS (OR LADYS) KENTUCKY RIFLE.
