Many Charleville Model 1763 and 1766 muskets were sent over to arm American troops after the decisive victory at Saratoga in 1777. This model was one of the primary and most widely used muskets by American forces during the Revolutionary War. This musket certainly saw American use as one of the bands had been lost and a sheet brass ferrule was used to replace it, the comb has been modified as well, and a large "W" inscribed on the left side of the buttstock. The round barrel is stamped with the Charleville star over "D" on the top of the breech. The flat lockplate has partially visible "Charleville" in script. Typical Model 1766 iron furniture. Partially figured walnut stock marked on left side with deeply stamped "D" and carved with large "W". The center band is absent and a brass ramrod ferrule was added during the period of use along with a replacement iron ramrod. CONDITION: Good, without alterations or restoration. All iron components retain a dark even patina, some corrosion to breech and center of lockplate. Lock is in original flintlock configuration. Stock very good with wear and scattered marks from use.
