Manufactured in 1853, serial numbers 688 and 698 two of approximately 700 London 3rd Model Dragoons. Standard 7-1/2 inch octagon to round barrels marked one line: -ADDRESS SAM'L COLT NEW-YORK CITY- Chambered in .44 caliber percussion. Blue with case hardened frames, loading levers, and hammers. Silver plated backstraps and triggerguards. High figured one piece burl walnut grips varnished with high gloss. Both revolvers are profusely and masterfully hand engraved in the classic London style with delicate scrolls and hatched backgrounds. Scroll engraving featured on the barrels at the breech, muzzle, and lugs. The hammers, frames, loading levers, and backstraps are also engraved with scroll work. The trigger guards are scroll engraved with fancy borders. Left side of frames are hand engraved "COLTS PATENT" in script within banners. Barrel address is framed with fancy borders. British proof marks found on both revolvers at the barrel lugs, and six places at each cylinder chamber. Housed in a period partition fitted walnut case with burgundy interior, complete with London type powder flask marked: "JAMES DIXON & SONS SHEFFIELD". Two cavity blued steel bullet mold marked: "COLT'S PATENT". Two English style pewter oil bottles marked:"DIXON & SONS" and a pair of percussion cap tins marked: "ELEY LONDON". CONDITION: Both revolvers are professionally restored with most all the reapplied finishes remaining. Grips show a high gloss with little to no wear. Both revolvers have matching serial numbers on the barrels, frames, trigger guards, backstraps, wedges, cylinders, and cylinder arbors. Bores are excellent with modest abrasions. Actions are very tight and crisp. All cylinder safety pins are intact. Case is excellent overall. Interior is relined with a bright clean burgundy velvet . Accoutrements are excellent and correct. Overall an exceedingly handsome pair of highly embellished London Dragoons. Less than a couple hundred London engraved Dragoons are believed to have been produced. -MKS-
