Manufactured in the first quarter of 1875, this carbine falls into the range of guns that could have been issued to Custer's 7th Cavalry prior to the Battle of Little Bighorn. The last documented grouping of carbines issued to the 7th Cavalry fall into the 42000 range, this example numbered 42579. 42259 is recorded as recaptured after the battle. Captain Henry Jackson also turned in unserviceable carbine 43617. It sports a correctly un-proofed 22" barrel with 1-piece front sight and an early style unmarked carbine ladder rear sight. High arch breech block marked "MODEL / 1873 / (eagle head with crossed arrows) / US". "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873" marked lock with 3-click tumbler. Later replacement stock with assembled mounts, including barrel band with stacking swivel, saddle ring, 2-piece trigger guard, and butt plate without trap.
Condition: Good. Metal has some added finish with evidence of older oxidation throughout. Stock is fine as replaced with some scattered light impressions and staining around the butt plate. Dark, heavily frosted bore with defined rifling. Fine mechanics.
