Manufactured 1856 through 1860. Full octagon barrel with integral magazine tube attached. Address reads on barrel as "THE VOLCANIC REPEATING ARMS COMPANY PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB 14, 1854". Brass frame with engraving on left and right sides. Gold plated receiver. Case colored hammer, lever, and trigger. Serial number marked on right side of lever "2281". Buttplate is marked "88", stock not marked. Buttplate screws are marked "88". Stock comes with straight grain American walnut. Octagon barrel retains 90-95% original blue with only the back portion of barrel next to receiver turning a light patina mixed with blue. Integral magazine tube is 95% original blue. Only the forward end of magazine tube is turning a deep plum color. Receiver retains some gold plating but only in protected areas. Edges and corners are sharp, sideplates look to have not been removed. Right side of receiver is also gold plated but with small amounts left in protected areas. Rear sight is typical Volcanic adjusting sight with dark nitre blue of about 70-75%. Case colors on hammer have turned dark with a drag line appearing on right side, overall color remaining about 75-80%. Lever is mostly a dark patina with no color showing, as is trigger with dark patina. Finish on left side of wood is with some surface scratches and impressions, a few light gouge marks with one small chip of wood missing in the corner of the upper side of left receiver and a 1-1/2" crack running to bottom of stock through a knot that has dried up. Right side of stock has a long scratch from the comb of stock to about 1-1/2" to flange of buttplate. Light impressions and light surface scratches remain. Buttplate fit is very fine and stock fit to receiver is very fine. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanics are fine and cycles properly. From the Ray Bentley Collection.
