Produced under contract for the US government in Providence, Rhode Island using the Springfield 1861 pattern. These were widely used during the Civil War. This example is dated 1864 on lock and tang. Maker legend is found on the lock along with eagle head "VP" stamp on barrel breech. The left side of the walnut stock has two crisp inspector cartouche stamps: "CRM" for Charles R. Monagle and "OWA" for Orville W. Ainsworth. The lock has the US Eagle with Providence Tool Co. legend. Features the standard three bands, two swivels, metal ramrod, folding leaf military sight, with all metal finished bright. CONDITION: Excellent. Appears unissued, with just minor scattered handling marks, nominal age spotting with little oxidation. The nipple is still sharp. The stock still exhibits the raised grain. Mechanically sound. Bore is mirror bright. All screws are true. One would be very hard pressed to find a nicer example.
