Lot consists of a pair of Smith & Wesson Second Model .38 single action revolvers shipped together on June 8, 1878 to New York dealer M.W. Robinson, and subsequently cased and embellished by the retailer. Both nickel finished revolvers are fit with ribbed 4" barrels, half moon front sights, and v-notch latch rear sights. New York scroll engraved over punch dot backgrounds with additional dot and rope decoration. Gilt 5-shot fluted cylinders, latches, hammers, and spur triggers. 2-piece pearl grips. Revolvers are housed in a period French fitted hardwood case with 2 empty United States Cartridge Co. picture cartridge boxes, making for a handsome set. CONDITION: Near excellent as embellished by the retailer. The vast majority of the period nickel and gilt finishes are retained with some light freckling and minor losses, (A) showing more thinning on the cylinder. (A) has a chip at the base of the right grip panel; (B) has a very minor chip on the left panel. Strong bores and fine mechanics. Case is very good showing some expected handling wear and impressions, as well as some minor chipping. Cartridge boxes have some edge wear with clean labels. A very fine pair of New York engraved Smith & Wessons.
