1881-1883 vintage Marlin Model 1881 lever action rifle, serial number 2028. 28" octagon barrel chambered in .40-60 Marlin with German silver blade front sight and rifle rear sight. 2-piece checkered walnut stock and forearm with rifle forearm cap and rifle buttplate. This Marlin appears to be factory engraved featuring scroll on a punch dot background with a bear on right side, a buck on top, and a deer on left sides of receiver all in their own Ulrichesque vignettes. Factory records before serial number 4096 are extremely scarce and records for this serial number were unable to be found. CONDITION: Very good, with metal assemblies turned a pleasant brown-grey patina with scattered handling marks throughout. Stock and forearm are very good as lightly cleaned with light handling marks and small repair on left side of forearm near receiver. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is frosted with minor abrasion throughout from period use with corrosive black powder with visible rifling. TON
