(A) NIMSCHKE ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION SADDLE RING CARBINE
Manufactured 1871. Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine in .44 Rimfire, engraved by Master Engraver Louis D. Nimschke. Receiver is embellished with his full scroll and vine with figural eagle's head as depicted on page 55 of the "L.D. Nimschke: Firearms Engraver" by R.L.Wilson. Left side of frame has eagle vignette with balance in his Germanic inspired scrolls with pearl background. Top of chamber has his starburst or "splash", as it is referred to, while rear of top of receiver is embellished with more scroll and vine with small pearl background. Right side of receiver is embellished to match left side without eagle vignette but with a name panel for presentation. Upper and lower tang are both engraved with the same motif and further embellished with small clamshell pattern shield. Round barrel with front sight integral to front band. Full magazine. Oil finished walnut stock with brass buttplate embellished with same scroll and vine and is numbered internal to the frame with matching numbers. CONDITION: Very fine with barrel and magazine retaining 40% dark blue with balance thinning and toning to period patina. Bore is very good with well defined rifling. Receiver has toned to a wonderful mustard patina. Stock is very fine with some very minor impressions and a sling wear area from the saddle ring. Mechanically excellent.
