One of only 47 examples ever produce according to Don Wilkerson in his book "Colts Double Action Revolvers Model 1878" were ever produced with the 3-1/2" barrel. The included Colt factory letter confirms the caliber, 3-1/2" barrel and blue finish with the type of stocks not listed. The revolver was shipped to M. Kennedy & Brothers of St. Paul, Minnesota, as part of a two gun shipment on March 23rd, 1885. Ejectorless Colt Model 1878 revolvers with a 3-1/2" barrel, like this example, are scarce. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two line Hartford address and the left side of the trigger guard is stamped "45 CAL". The serial number is stamped on the butt with the partial serial number "551" on the cylinder. The assembly "58" stamped on the loading gate. Fitted with checkered rampant Colt grips. The right grip panel is numbered to another gun (3913) and the left grip panel is numbered to the gun (551). CONDITION: Fine. The revolver retains 25% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. There is some scattered light pitting and spotting. The grips are also fine with some minor handling marks and some wear in the checkering. Mechanically fine. A great opportunity to own a well documented great rarity from Colt.
