Traditionally, Henry Leman is known for his well-made trade and utility percussion muzzleloaders of circa 1850. This gun demonstrates that he could turn out a rifle of great lines and art. This rifle has to be one of his finest works with a 37 - 3/8" octagonal .45 caliber rifled barrel with German silver blade front sight, rear notch sight, and patent breech. Barrel is stamped "LEMAN LANCASTER" with breech fit with 2 gold bands and gold washed touch mark reading "Leman Patent". Highly floral engraved back action lock with shaped hammer and rare single set trigger control. Fine, checkered deluxe walnut half stock with cheekpiece and floral engraved shaped German silver trigger guard and hardware. Unusual oval side opening patchbox with engraved floral borders, 4 piercings, and lid engraved with a dragon headed fish. Has unique second trap in toe for caps or other tools. Gun has hardwood ramrod with silver tip. Comes with consignor research which includes a price list indicating cost in 1872. Most interesting in packet is a rare Leman signed document with mention of C. Schrack, a paint and varnish vendor. PROVENANCE: Former Doctor Richard J. Labowskie Collection. CONDITION: Overall good with barrel turning a plum brown. Lock has sharp engraving with traces of case color fading to brown. Silver has bright appearance with sharp engraving. Wood has traces of original finish with old replaced piece in front of lock. Good bore with visible rifling and good functioning mechanics. A fine rifle built no doubt for wealthy customer or as a showpiece.
