It is estimated just 50 to 100 of these second variation manually operated grooved cylinder revolving rifles were manufactured by James Warner circa 1849. Fitted with a carbine length octagon barrel, the 1 - 1/4" at the muzzle turned round with a flare at the muzzle and integral front sight. A drift adjustable v-notch rear sight is set into the frame. Hand rotated percussion cylinder with faint etched decorations. Left side of the frame a partially visible "WARNER'S / PATENT" marking. Right side plate is deeply stamped "JAMES WARNER / SPRINGFIELD, MASS". Plain walnut stock with brass cap box and steel crescent butt plate. CONDITION: Good. Metal displays a mottled gray patina as cleaned with evidence of older oxidation throughout. Stock has been lightly sanded and reoiled with some scattered marks remaining. Bore shows well defined rifling with some expected black powder abrasions. Fine mechanics. A few of the nipples show damage. PROVENANCE: Ex. Castlerock Museum.
