Unknown date of manufacture. This nine shot percussion pepperbox is shaped like a whiskey barrel. Having a drop down door that exposes the muzzle and a matching door that operates a percussion hammer. The trigger is a small nub protruding from the bottom. This exact example is featured on page 165 of Lewis Winants book "FIREARMS CURIOSA" and is identified by staining and imperfections on the sides and ends. The gun is attributed at time of printing to the collection of Anthony Fidd Jr.. Little is known of this unique pepperbox and this is the only example known. The outer body is constructed of German Silver and the gun is operated by opening the muzzle gate and pulling the opposite door latch to the rear cocking the gun to fire. The body of the barrel can be rotated to expose the next of nine barrels. A small compartment for storing bullets is in the 10th chamber slot. This intriguing pepperbox is obviously a creation by a skilled craftsman capable of making the firing mechanism, gears for indexing and doing the skilled German silver work. No name or identifying marks are found during disassembly. CONDITION: Very good as found. The action operates properly however is very hard to cock the striking hammer. The German silver has a very pleasant patina and appears to have never been polished. TDW
