An exceptionally unusual flintlock pistol by Blair and Sutherland with a long 16 - 1/4" barrel and a short "pistol" grip with checkering at the wrist. The configuration of the checkering and the trigger guard tang indicates that this gun was manufactured this way and not as a rifle that was later trimmed down. Octagonal barrel with small bead front sight, and scallop cut rear sight, marked "LONDON" on top flat, with Tower private proofs and an indistinct maker mark offset. Touchhole with a gold bushing. Flat lock with bevelled edges, integral fence, raised waterproof pan, bridled pan cover, roller bearing frizzen spring, swan neck cock and an English-style sliding safety with articulation tab broken off. 2 sidebolts feed through escutcheons. Stock with German silver plate on wrist, retained by 2 keys through lozenge escutcheons. Brass trumpet head ramrod with worm on reverse, retained by a single ferrue and feeding into a reinforced mouth with spearpoint finial. Trigger guard with a well detailed pineapple finial and floral engraving on the guard, with an additional screw that attaches the tang to bottom of grip. CONDITION: Metal is a smooth gunmetal grey throughout with some scattered areas of darkness and oil staining. Stock with handling marks throughout, with cracks on left side of muzzle and right ahead of lock. Small wood repair around one side bolt. Mechanically fine, bore is very good with some minor areas of oxidation. An unusual piece.
