This Type II Model 1803 rifle is one of 15,707 of these Type II rifles made between 1814 and 1820 by Harper's Ferry. Two-stage rifled steel barrel with sights mounted on top, breech stamped with eagles head proof and traces of "US" and "P" cartouche. Top flat stamped with regimental markings "11 VA. REGT. HARRISON." in block letters, between rear sight and breech. Flat Type II lockplate with beveled edges, converted to percussion, center stamped with large eagle and tail stamped vertically "HARPER'S/FERRY/1816". Standard Model 1803 Type II brass furniture. Walnut half-stock with long relief cheekpiece and brass band near tip of forend, barrel with steel rib mounted below. Complete with a large archive of information about the 11th Virginia Regiment of Harrison County. During the Civil War, the 11th Virginia split into two regiments. Half stayed with the North, as the Union Home Guard, but the Harrison County Rifles chose to join the Confederacy. Very good to good condition, overall. Barrel retains a spotted grey patina with some freckling and scattered marks from use, shortened by slightly less than 2 inches during period of use, area around regimental markings has been polished, markings somewhat worn. Lock good, as converted during period of use, with brown patina and markings partially worn. Brass retains a mellow patina with some light wear, freckling and scattered marks from use. Stock good with scattered marks from use and a few darker areas, cracked between sideplate and bottom of lockplate. Overall, an historic rifle with scarce markings and an interesting history!
