Armstrong & Taylor of Augusta, Kentucky, was a partnership of James W. Armstrong and John Taylor, co-patentees of a firearm protected by US Patent 37025 of November 1862. One gun was submitted to the US Army trials of 1865, although rejected by the government. The barrel rotated on a longitudinal pin to expose the chamber; a cam track cut in the barrel pin operated the extractor automatically as the breech was opened. This particular gun is marked on the left side of the barrel "ARMSTRONG & TAYLOR/ PATENT NOV 25 1862". The right side of the barrel is marked "M. GREENWOOD MANUF/ CINCINNATI, O". Miles Greenwood of the Eagle Iron Works is best known for performing alterations on Model 1842 smoothbore muskets to rifled-muskets as well as conversions from flintlock to percussion for the state of Ohio during the Civil War. M. Greenwood and the Eagle Iron Works were also known to make cannon. This very rare gun is not even mentioned in "Flayderman's Guide To Antique American Firearms and Their Values". 26 - 1/4 inch barrel that swivels to the right for loading. Wood stock. Ladder rear sight. .41 Rimfire caliber. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing patina overall. Markings are clear. Fine mechanical function. Stock is very good with light scratches and handling marks. There is a 1 - 1/2 inch old crack in the left side of the stock where it meets the receiver. Bore is fine with strong rifling and light areas of pitting. Missing the front sight blade.
