Rare Model 1892 smoothbore lever action rifle made by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1913. Rifle was probably special ordered by John Garrett of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Garrett owned a large sporting goods store in Colorado Springs and was known as a deadeye, even competing with Annie Oakley and other fine shooters of the day. It is said he rarely missed a clay pigeon thrown into the air, maybe explaining his desire for this rare rifle, or perhaps it was obtained to go with him on one of his trips up Pike's Peak, or with President Teddy Roosevelt's guide John B. Gough in the White River Country. Blued Winchester 2-line address marked on 24" round barrel in .44 W.C.F. with sheared silver blade front sight, adjustable notched Winchester 22K rear sight, and "SMOOTHBORE" stamped to left. Blued action with plain trigger and full magazine. Plain walnut stocks with crescent blued buttplate. Comes with former owner research on John Garrett, which shows him shooting from a truck at Pike's Peak Rodeo in 1922 with what looks like a lever action Winchester. PROVENANCE: Richard Burdick Collection. CONDITION: 98% original barrel blue with light edge wear. 98% action blue with fantastic screws. Tang has marks from removed tang sight. 98% original Winchester varnish with sharp. Excellent bore and mechanics. A great addition to a Winchester collection.
