After Germany annexed Austria in 1938, the Luftwaffe, in desperate need for arms, took over control of the Steyr plant which was then producing M12/34 rifles for a Columbian contract. Before the factory could be retooled to produce K98 Mausers, left over M12/34 parts were assembled during a brief period from 1938 into 1939 for the Luftwaffe under the G.29(O) designation. This example is marked with the early "660" Steyr code and "1939" date. Standard configuration with blued finish, blade front sight, tangent rear, and eagle over "L" Luftwaffe acceptance stamped finger groove walnut stocks. Complete with crosshatch pattern leather sling. Externally visible numbers are matching, excluding the cleaning rod and bolt. Bolt matches itself. No visible import marks. CONDITION: Good. Significant portions of arsenal blue are retained, especially on the receiver. The balance has largely faded to gray patina with light older oxidation spotting. Stocks have heavy handling as expected on a military rifle. Stamping remains clear. Strong bore with frosting in the grooves. Fine mechanics.
