Extremely rare and correct Pre-64 Model 70 Super Grade carbine in special order .358 Winchester made by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1956. Winchester dropped the .358 Winchester chambering of the Model 70 in December of 1956, making it the fifth most rare caliber with roughly 2000 Featherweights known in this caliber. This rifle is 1 of 2 legitimate Super Grade Carbines known in this caliber by this long time Model 70 collector! Blued 20" Winchester Proof Steel barrel with striated hooded front ramp sight, frequently used in the 1955-1957 period, with front sight a gold bead Lyman sight as used on all Super Grades. Lyman 16B folding rear sight, in use on Monte Carlo stocked rifles since 1954. Barrel has Winchester address and "-MODEL 70- 358 WIN.-" marking, with underside marked "358 SUPER 56". Type III matted finish action, serial numbered 364100, with matching electropenciled numbered jeweled bolt and follower, correct 3-position safety, and "R" inspector marked hollow bolt handle. Blued steel detachable floorplate marked "- SUPER GRADE -". Checkered walnut Monte Carlo pistol grip Super Grade pattern stock with late style cheekpiece, checkered steel buttplate, unmarked steel grip cap, black forend cap, and Super Grade style quick detachable sling swivels. CONDITION: 98% metal finish with light edge wear. 95% varnish with light edge flaking, sharp checkering, and small storage marks. Bolt handle turning slightly silver from use with bolt jeweling almost all present. Excellent bore with action that works smooth as glass. An extremely hard to find caliber and configuration that is factory legitimate.
