According to the factory research, serial number was applied September 24th, 1901; listed as a trap grade, takedown, 30" 12 gauge. This shotgun is referred to as the Black Diamond Trap that features triple X walnut stock, straight grip, checkered, with black diamonds on both sides of wrist. Solid brown buttpad has been added more recently. Exhibits fiery grain and has had finish added as checkering is smoothing out and has some oil over it. The round small forend checkering is sharp and has not been refinished. Color matches perfectly. Left side of frame has approximately 20% blue. Balance of frame and trigger guard are grey patina. Barrel retains approximately 85-90% original blue. Tube is greyed out. Bright shiny bore. Tight lock-up. Perfect action. While not mentioned in the factory letter, the shotgun now bears another barrel forend assembly complete with checkered walnut handle. It has a matching serial number to the other two pieces. The second one is a 28" barrel stamped "IMP-CYL.". Barrel is stamped "MODEL 97". The forend is thicker than the early one. More modern barrel markings, so it was ordered by the factory at a later date and simply not recorded. This barrel retains approximately 95% original blue. Tube retains 80% original blue. Bore is mint. Nice, early factory lettered Black Diamond set.
