Circa 1977. A lovely chopper lump 27" game gun by one of London's Best makers. Nitro proof barrels with ejectors and 3" chambers are furnished with side clip mounts, third fastener extension, and a narrow Churchill styled matte rib with round front steel bead. Right barrel reads "AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET, LONDON. ENGLAND.". Left barrel reads "J. PURDEY & SONS.". Left barrel is choked Modified while the right barrel is choked Improved Cylinder. Barrel flats with London proof "LP / 76", ".615", "20" in diamond, 3", "3 1/2 TONS". Barrel bottoms stamped "28070" for serial number, "PURDEY", "A.H" (Alf Harvey - barrel maker). Lumps stamped "73815" and "73816" for tube numbers. Case color hardened side locked action is built with hidden third fastener, set disk strikers, cocking indicators, side clips, fire blued double triggers, blacked scroll engraved and checkered top lever, scroll engraved and checkered slide safe. "SAFE" in gold. Gun is built with auto-safe. Action and fences are engraved with scrolls and gold inlays of a brace of gold flying quail on left, gold flying grouse on right and a gold duck. Lock plates are engraved "J. Purdey & Sons. at top and "LONDON ENGLAND" at bar. Engraving performed by Master Engraver "K.C Hunt 77" as signed on right lock plate. Double triggers are protected by a blacked scroll engraved trigger guard which extends to a long bottom strap with scroll engraving and gun's serial number "28070". Traditional reddish brown walnut stock with smoky lines is with a fine and sharply checkered English straight hand grip, vacant gold oval, and completed by a checkered butt. The Purdey styled shorter splinter forend with matched checkering is built with an Anson push release and an escutcheon pin; iron metal is blacked and scroll engraved. Gun lives in a James Purdey & Sons brown oak and leather makers case. Case is furnished with horn handled turnscrews, snap caps, oil bottle, extractor key, striker pot with spare strikers, paperwork, charge card and cleaning equipment. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels retain 98% black. Bores are like mirrors. Action is strong and sound. Triggers are crisp. Ejectors are strong and in time. Stock and forend are near mint. Case is excellent with very light handling indentations. Great gun.
